Gas

Amidst the transition towards a greener energy future, the EU gas sector has taken active steps to diversify its supply sources and invest in infrastructure to enhance reliability and further integrate renewable gases such as biomethane and hydrogen.

Yet, as the EU strives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance energy security, the gas sector faces evolving challenges and opportunities. Geopolitical risks, market volatility, infrastructure bottlenecks, and the technical and financial hurdles of decarbonisation are amongst these key issues.

Against this backdrop, CEER primarily focuses on making sure that Europe’s gas infrastructure is robust and works in the interest of consumers. Our national regulators monitor supply security, assess risks, and enhance the resilience of the gas supply chain. Additionally, we have taken steps to support the integration of renewable gases like biomethane and hydrogen through regulatory harmonisation, infrastructure development, and market transparency.

Looking ahead, striking the right balance between energy security and climate goals remains critical as the sector transitions towards a sustainable future. CEER is committed to ensuring that Europe’s gas sector remains competitive, secure, and sustainable, playing a crucial role in the energy transition.
