CEER report points to critical role of LNG in EU security of supply and market competition

Today, CEER publishes its new report on “The influence of new LNG terminals on the future EU energy market.”

The report examines recent developments in the LNG sector, analysing how it will impact the future EU energy market. It addresses LNG’s role amid the current energy crisis, focusing on capacity allocation mechanisms and access conditions, providing a comprehensive overview of this growing energy source.

Key findings show that:

• Regasification capacity has expanded significantly at global level in the last years. This trend is expected to continue.
• Net LNG imports in Europe increased by 60% compared to 2021, representing nearly one third of the world LNG imports. Europe is now the second-largest importing region.
• The significant LNG increase in Europe’s energy system is related to efforts to reduce dependency and increase gas system resilience.
• LNG is now considered a critical source of security of supply and market competition for the European energy market.
• The expansion of LNG infrastructure will play a critical role in allowing ease of access to the European market.
